Grand Rapids, MI \u2014 A Michigan man has been sentenced to 33 to 60 years in prison after pleading no contest to the second-degree murder of his 2-year-old daughter, Khalise Brewer, who was fatally shot in February 2022. Seninta Parks, 31, appeared in 17th Circuit Court on Thursday, where he was sentenced for the murder of his daughter, as well as additional charges related to firearms. Parks was sentenced to a prison term of 33 to 60 years for second-degree murder, two years for a felony firearm charge, and a concurrent sentence of two to five years for being a felon in possession of a firearm.<\/div>\n
He was also ordered to pay approximately $1,800 in court fees and costs. The tragic incident occurred on February 9, 2022, inside Parks\u2019 apartment in Wyoming, Michigan.<\/div>\n

According to authorities, Parks shot his daughter, Khalise, in the head before turning the gun on himself. He survived the self-inflicted injury and was briefly hospitalized before being taken into police custody. During the sentencing, Judge Clay West addressed the gravity of Parks’ crime, condemning him for the senseless violence. \u201cLooking back to Feb. 9, 2022, you shot and killed your 2-year-old daughter,\u201d Judge West said.<\/div>\n

He also noted that Parks had fired a second shot that could have injured a neighbor in the apartment building below. \u201cLuckily, it didn\u2019t,\u201d the judge added. Parks’ defense attorney asked the court to consider his client’s mental health issues during sentencing, which had been a factor in his initial competency evaluation. Parks himself briefly addressed the court, offering a public apology. \u201cI sincerely apologize to Kambria and her family, to my family, to the courts,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n

However, Khalise\u2019s mother, Kambria Brewer, and her aunt spoke passionately about the devastation caused by Parks’ actions. Brewer expressed that no apology could ever bring her daughter back, describing the loss as an unending nightmare. \u201cEvery night I pray to dream of her. Because that \u2026 will be the closest I will ever get to be next to her again,\u201d Brewer said tearfully. She shared that Khalise was a loving, joyful child with a smile that could light up any room, and she expressed her sorrow over the life her daughter would never have. Khalise’s aunt also spoke at the sentencing, condemning Parks for failing to protect his daughter. \u201cYou were supposed to be her protector. You were supposed to love her\u2014 instead, you are her killer,\u201d she said.<\/div>\n

The aunt described the pain of realizing that Khalise would never experience milestones like father-daughter dances or school events.<\/div>\n
She stated that the family would never recover from the loss, and expressed a desire for Parks to feel the pain he had inflicted on them during his time in prison. While the sentence has been handed down, the grief of Khalise\u2019s family remains an ever-present reality.<\/div>\n
