KALAMAZOO, Mich. \u2014 A 3-year-old girl is in critical condition after accidentally shooting herself Saturday night in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The incident occurred when the child discovered a firearm in a vehicle and unintentionally discharged it.<\/p>\n

Around 9 p.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) responded to a report of a child with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The child\u2019s parents were transporting her to the hospital when authorities arrived at the scene, which was located near E Vine Street and Portage Street.<\/p>\n

Investigators learned that the young girl and her sibling had been left unattended in a vehicle parked outside a residence. The gun, legally owned by a concealed pistol license (CPL) holder, was stored in the center console of the vehicle. While inside, the girl accessed the firearm and shot herself.<\/p>\n

The child remains in critical condition but is expected to recover, according to KDPS officials.<\/p>\n

At this time, no arrests have been made, and the firearm, along with the vehicle, has been taken into police custody for further investigation.<\/p>\n

Danielle Guilds, captain of the Criminal Investigations Division, addressed the situation, urging all gun owners to take necessary precautions to prevent similar incidents.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>While\u00a0<\/span>we\u00a0<\/span>are\u00a0<\/span>relieved\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>hear\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>child\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>path\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>recovery,\u00a0<\/span>this\u00a0<\/span>incident\u00a0<\/span>could\u00a0<\/span>have\u00a0<\/span>ended\u00a0<\/span>far\u00a0<\/span>worse,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Guilds\u00a0<\/span>said\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>statement. \u201c<\/span>We\u00a0<\/span>urge\u00a0<\/span>all\u00a0<\/span>firearm\u00a0<\/span>owners\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>take\u00a0<\/span>every\u00a0<\/span>precaution\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>ensure\u00a0<\/span>their\u00a0<\/span>weapons\u00a0<\/span>are\u00a0<\/span>properly\u00a0<\/span>secured\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>inaccessible\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n
