GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. \u2014 Starting Wednesday, May 7, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will begin enforcing the REAL ID requirement for passengers flying domestically. Travelers hoping to pass through TSA security checkpoints will need to present a REAL ID-compliant identification, marked by a gold star in the top right corner of their driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n

The REAL ID requirement stems from recommendations made by the 9\/11 Commission, which called for stronger national security measures. According to Jessica Mayle, spokesperson for TSA Great Lakes, the initiative is designed to standardize security across the country and introduce enhanced anti-counterfeiting and fraud protection features in identification documents.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to ensure that the person standing at the checkpoint is the same person on the ID,\u201d Mayle explained. \u201cThe gold star on the ID signifies that it meets federal security standards.\u201d<\/p>\n

For passengers who have already updated their IDs to comply with the REAL ID standards, or who possess a valid U.S. passport, the process at security checkpoints should be seamless. Mayle emphasized that these compliant passengers are not expected to face extended wait times.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have an operation plan in place to ensure flexibility at each airport and minimize the impact on compliant passengers,\u201d she said. \u201cThat said, the early morning hours, particularly between 5 and 8 a.m., tend to be busy, so it\u2019s always wise to arrive early.\u201d<\/p>\n

For those who have not yet obtained a REAL ID, a valid U.S. passport will still be acceptable for domestic flights. Passengers can choose whether to use their passport for all domestic travel or obtain a REAL ID to avoid carrying their passport each time they fly.<\/p>\n

TSA has assured that travelers without the necessary documentation will still be able to board their flights, though the process may be more involved.<\/p>\n

As the deadline approaches, TSA is urging all travelers to check their identification and make necessary updates ahead of time to avoid any delays or complications at the airport. With the summer travel season approaching, travelers are encouraged to prepare well in advance to ensure smooth airport experiences.<\/p>\n
