Grand Rapids, MI – A fire broke out early Sunday morning at a fabrication shop in Portage, Michigan, but fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. Fire crews from the Portage Department of Public Safety (PDPS) were dispatched to the scene around 6 a.m., where they found the building located on Terry Lane, off Bacon Avenue, engulfed in flames.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered significant challenges due to the building’s long access drives and limited entry points. In order to gain better access, an excavator was brought in to help open up the structure, making it easier for crews to battle the fire.

“This fire had likely been burning for an extended period before it was discovered,” said Battalion Chief Lou Playford. “I am incredibly proud of the actions taken by our crews, especially considering this was their second heavily involved structure fire in less than 12 hours. The coordination and dedication displayed on scene were outstanding.”

Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the blaze, but the situation required careful and coordinated efforts to ensure the fire was fully contained. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, though PDPS has indicated that it is not considered suspicious at this time.

Despite the severity of the fire, no injuries were reported. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
