GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A woman is in the hospital following a domestic assault early Sunday morning in Grand Rapids. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. at a home located near Division Avenue South and Sutton Street SW.
Officers with the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) responded to the scene and discovered that both the woman and a man had sustained injuries during the altercation. According to GRPD, the woman was able to escape the house with the children who were inside at the time of the incident.
The woman was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities confirmed her injuries are not considered life-threatening. The man involved in the assault barricaded himself inside the home following the altercation. After a tense negotiation, the man surrendered to police and was taken into custody.
The man was also treated for injuries that, according to GRPD, are not believed to be life-threatening. Fortunately, the children in the home at the time of the assault were unharmed.
The investigation into the domestic assault is ongoing, and authorities have not released further details regarding the events leading up to the altercation.
