SPENCER TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A man has been taken into custody after a shooting early Monday morning in Spencer Township, which left a teenage boy injured.

At approximately 12:15 a.m., deputies from the Kent County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a home on Keller Avenue NE, near 21 Mile Road, following reports of a shooting. Upon arriving at the scene, investigators learned that a confrontation had occurred between two adults inside the home. During the altercation, the struggle over a firearm resulted in the weapon discharging, striking a teenage boy in the foot. The injured teen was treated at a local hospital and later released.

A second child in the home managed to run to a neighbor’s house to seek help, authorities said.

The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Andres Simons-Salgado, fled the scene before deputies arrived. Authorities initially issued a warning to the public, describing Simons-Salgado as “armed and dangerous.”

Later on Monday, Simons-Salgado was apprehended in Greenville and is currently being held at the Kent County Correctional Facility. The Kent County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing the case to determine whether formal charges will be filed.

In addition to the local investigation, federal authorities have been notified due to Simons-Salgado’s involvement in an ongoing investigation regarding illegal re-entry into the United States.

The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, with more details expected to emerge in the coming days.
