GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A 26-year-old man has been charged in connection with Grand Rapids’ first fatal shooting of 2025.
Keith Tett was arraigned Wednesday on six criminal counts, including open murder, carrying a concealed weapon, being a felon in possession of a weapon, and felony firearm charges as a fourth-time habitual offender.
The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on May 23 near the intersection of Wealthy Street SE and Giddings Avenue SE. According to the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD), the victim, identified as 31-year-old Montaness Lowe, was transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom expressed gratitude to community members who came forward with information leading to the arrest. “GRPD has exceptional detectives, but rarely can they make an arrest without people stepping up and speaking up,” Winstrom said in a statement. He added that the community’s support in seeking justice for Lowe may provide some comfort and healing to the victim’s loved ones.
Describing the shooting as an “absolute tragedy,” Winstrom emphasized that there is no indication Lowe was armed or involved in any criminal activity at the time of the shooting.
Tett, who was also reported as a parole absconder out of Ingham County as of May 23, is currently being held without bond. He is scheduled to appear in court for a hearing on June 17.
