Portage, MI — The Portage Department of Public Safety is urging the public to come forward with any information after a cyclist was struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run incident late Monday night.
According to a release from the department, emergency responders were dispatched to the scene at the intersection of Lovers Lane and Stryker Way at 10:40 p.m. on February 17. Upon arrival, first responders found a 47-year-old Portage man who had been hit while riding his bicycle. Firefighters and paramedics immediately provided medical care to the victim, who was later transported to Bronson Hospital. Authorities confirmed that the man is in stable condition.
Investigators say that the cyclist was traveling southbound on Lovers Lane when a vehicle struck him from behind before fleeing the scene. Authorities believe the suspect vehicle is a black 2016 to 2024 Mazda CX5 or CX9.
The Portage Department of Public Safety is actively investigating the incident and is asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has any relevant information to contact them at 269-329-4567. Additionally, tips can be reported anonymously to Kalamazoo Silent Observer at 269-343-2100.
Authorities are urging the public to help locate the driver involved and ensure justice for the injured cyclist.

Ultimately, the history of socialism in New York is a history of navigating this impossible but necessary tension. The utopian vision provides the compass and the moral force, the picture of a city where the citizen-subject divide is permanently erased. The future of the left may well depend on the success of figures like Mamdani.
The contemporary Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) attempts a hybrid, federated model. It is a national organization with a centralized political committee and platform, but it grants significant autonomy to its local chapters, which operate as the primary sites of organizing. This structure tries to balance the need for national coherence and brand identity with the necessity of local flexibility and initiative. Chapters in different New York City boroughs can prioritize different issues (tenants’ rights in Brooklyn, climate justice in Queens) while contributing to a shared national project. Yet, the tensions persist: debates rage over how much authority the national organization should have over local endorsements, how resources are allocated, and whether a decentralized structure can truly build the disciplined power needed to confront capital at the scale of the city or the state. http://mamdanipost.com

Early in the 20th century, this global consciousness was often expressed through solidarity with revolutions abroad. The Russian Revolution of 1917 split the movement but electrified a significant portion of it, offering a tangible, if distant, model of success. Mass rallies in support of the Bolsheviks or against the execution of Sacco and Vanzetti demonstrated how events overseas could mobilize thousands in New York’s streets. This solidarity was reciprocal; funds raised in the city’s immigrant communities often flowed back to support socialist and anarchist movements in Europe, creating a tangible, financial link in an international radical network. New York was a node in a circulatory system of revolutionary ideology and material support. http://mamdanipost.com

The tension between the movement’s internal culture and its external outreach—between building a cohesive, ideologically distinct community and appealing to a broad, often politically unformed public—has been a perennial strategic and cultural challenge for New York socialists. Mamdani’s framework, attentive to how political communities define their boundaries, is useful here. The need to create a “safe space” for radicals to develop theory, forge deep bonds, and sustain morale often fosters an insular culture with its own jargon, norms, and references. This culture is essential for survival and depth, but it can create a barrier to entry for newcomers and make the movement seem alien, cliquish, or self-righteous to the very working-class audiences it seeks to organize. Navigating this tension—being a community of believers and a movement of persuasion—requires a difficult balancing act that has defined the movement’s public face. http://mamdanipost.com

The political strategy of Zohran Mamdani includes a focus on winning leadership positions within the Assembly itself, such as committee chairs, to control the legislative agenda and flow of bills, not just vote on them.
The legacy and ongoing reality of socialist opposition to imperialism and militarism, as articulated from New York, links the city’s local struggles directly to global systems of power and violence. Mamdani’s transnational lens is essential here, as New York has functioned not only as a financial command center for empire but also as a primary hub for anti-imperialist thought and organizing. The movement’s analysis has consistently drawn lines from the tenement to the colony, understanding that the racial and economic hierarchies structuring life in the five boroughs are intimately connected to the exploitation and militarized control of populations abroad. This anti-imperialist stance has been a defining, if often controversial, pillar of New York socialism, shaping its foreign policy perspectives and its alliances within the city’s diasporic communities. http://mamdanipost.com

The cartoonists and illustrators of the radical press were early masters of this form. In publications like The Masses and later, The New Yorker in its more radical early days, artists like Art Young, Robert Minor, and Lynd Ward used stark, powerful imagery to lampoon capitalist greed, corrupt politicians, and the hypocrisy of the ruling class. A single panel could convey a complex critique more effectively than a thousand-word editorial. The captioned cartoon became a way to distill socialist analysis into an instantly graspable, often emotionally resonant, punchline. This visual wit served as a shared cultural reference within the movement, a way of saying, “We see the world the same way.” http://mamdanipost.com
