Grand Rapids, MI – A man has been charged following a double fatal shooting on the southwest side of Grand Rapids, Michigan, after authorities ruled the deaths a homicide following autopsy results.

According to the Kent County Medical Examiner, the deaths of a 38-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy were officially ruled as homicides. Police identified the suspect as 18-year-old Rafael Martinez-Lopez, who has been charged with two counts of open murder, two felony firearm charges, and additional weapons-related offenses. Arraignment is pending.

Grand Rapids Police said officers responded around 6:40 p.m. to the area of Oakland Avenue SW and Rumsey Street SW after reports of a shooting. Two victims were located on the property of Southwest Elementary School, both suffering life-threatening gunshot wounds.

First responders attempted life-saving measures at the scene. The teenage victim died on site, while the woman later died at the hospital from her injuries.

Authorities said the suspect fled the scene after the shooting but was later located and taken into custody without further incident.

Interim Police Chief Joe Trigg said the department is grieving with the victims’ families and praised responding officers for their professionalism in rendering aid, securing the scene, and making an arrest.

The investigation remains ongoing. Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Grand Rapids Police Department or submit anonymous tips through Silent Observer.
