OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Two juveniles were detained by authorities on Thursday afternoon after being caught in the act of breaking into a vehicle in an Oshtemo Township parking lot. Deputies with the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call around 3 p.m. reporting the break-in at a business located on West Main Street.

According to the sheriff’s office, the juveniles had been confronted by staff members before fleeing the scene. They were last seen running toward a nearby Menards store. Deputies quickly located and detained the individuals inside the store.

Upon questioning, law enforcement officers discovered that one of the juveniles was in possession of a stolen handgun, while both had marijuana on their person. The juvenile found with the weapon was taken into custody and booked at the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home. The other juvenile was released to a family member. Charges are expected to be filed, though the identities of the minors have not been disclosed.

The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office used the incident as an opportunity to remind the public about vehicle safety, urging drivers to always lock their vehicles and avoid storing firearms inside. The department emphasized that keeping firearms secure can help prevent crime and improve public safety.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office at 269-383-8745 or Silent Observer at 269-343-2100.
