SOUTHGATE, Mich. — An early morning explosion devastated a home in a suburban Detroit neighborhood on Thursday, killing a woman and severely injuring a man. The blast, which occurred before dawn, sent debris flying across the area, with some of it landing blocks away and even getting caught in nearby trees.
According to Southgate police, the explosion took place just before 6 a.m., causing significant damage to the home and leaving the woman trapped beneath the rubble. She was later identified as a 38-year-old resident of the home. Despite rescue efforts, she succumbed to her injuries after being pulled from the wreckage. The man, who was reportedly thrown into the front yard by the force of the blast, suffered extensive burns and internal injuries. His condition remains critical.
Neighbor Arturo Ramirez, who lives just down the street, recalled the terrifying moment when the explosion occurred. “I thought it was thunder at first,” Ramirez told The Detroit News. “Then I saw a crack form on my ceiling.” The powerful force of the blast shattered windows and sent debris flying, including a couch that crashed into a window across the street.
Southgate police Det. Sgt. Nathan Mosczynski confirmed that the incident is being treated as a gas-related explosion, although the exact cause remains under investigation. “The root cause is still under investigation,” Mosczynski said, emphasizing that authorities are working to determine the precise circumstances that led to the deadly explosion.
As first responders worked at the scene, the neighborhood was left in shock. Residents described hearing a loud boom followed by the sight of smoke rising from the home. Many reported feeling the ground shake and fearing for their safety as the destruction unfolded.
At this time, authorities have not released the names of the victims, but the community remains in mourning as the investigation continues. The explosion has prompted renewed discussions about safety measures related to gas lines and home maintenance in the region.
As the investigation unfolds, Southgate police urge anyone with information about the incident to come forward. Meanwhile, local officials are providing support to the victims’ families as they cope with the aftermath of the tragedy.
