Grand Rapids, Mich. — The city of Grand Rapids has issued a no-burn alert, urging residents to refrain from all outdoor burning activities due to dry and windy conditions. The alert, issued by the Grand Rapids Fire Department on Tuesday, applies to all forms of outdoor burning, including charcoal grills, fire pits, and wood stoves. Even recreational wood-burning fires, which typically require a permit, are prohibited during this alert.
The decision to implement the no-burn alert was prompted by weather conditions that have placed Grand Rapids in a “very high” fire risk area, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Wind gusts of up to 40 mph have been reported in the region, increasing the likelihood of ground fires spreading quickly.
“Conditions exist that can contribute to ground fires that can easily spread,” said William Smith, Fire Marshal for the Grand Rapids Fire Department. “We are urging everyone to avoid burning outdoors in order to help prevent potential fires.”
The city has warned that violators of the no-burn alert could face citations or fines. Residents are also reminded never to burn yard waste, trash, leaves, or construction materials, which can contribute to fire hazards.
Despite the ban on most forms of outdoor burning, gas or propane-fueled fire containers that are fully self-contained are still permitted. These units can be used without a permit, providing an option for those looking to enjoy a fire safely during the alert.
The city expects rain to arrive on Thursday, which may help to alleviate the dry conditions. If the weather improves, officials hope to lift the no-burn alert. In the meantime, Grand Rapids residents are urged to stay vigilant and follow all safety guidelines to minimize the risk of fire hazards.
