KALAMAZOO, Mich. — One juvenile was arrested late Wednesday night after a series of car break-ins involving a group of at least three suspects in Kalamazoo. The thefts, which targeted more than 30 vehicles, occurred near several college campuses, prompting an active police investigation.
According to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS), the thefts took place Wednesday evening at multiple apartment complexes located on West Main Street, Drake Road, West Michigan Avenue, and Lafayette Avenue. Investigators said that the suspects targeted unlocked vehicles, stealing valuables such as credit cards, identification, money, and other personal items.
The situation escalated late in the evening when residents of Lafayette Avenue near Knollwood Park reported suspicious activity in the area. Upon arrival, officers discovered that at least three individuals, believed to be juveniles, had fled the scene.
In response, KDPS deployed a drone to search the area, which led to the identification and capture of one of the suspects. The juvenile is now facing charges related to the thefts, although authorities have not confirmed the identities of the other individuals involved in the crime spree.
As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with information about the thefts to come forward. Tips can be reported to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at 269-337-8139 or through Silent Observer at 269-343-2100.
The thefts serve as a reminder for residents to take extra precautions to secure their vehicles, particularly in areas with high foot traffic, such as near college campuses. Authorities are continuing to investigate whether the thefts are part of a larger trend in the area.
