ANTWERP TOWNSHIP, MI — A crash at an intersection near Mattawan on Tuesday afternoon left one man dead and two others injured, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. at the intersection of County Road 657 and 58th Avenue in Antwerp Township. Deputies reported that the 96-year-old driver of a Ford F150 pickup truck was traveling east on 58th Avenue when he failed to stop at the intersection with County Road 657. As a result, his truck was broadsided by a Chevrolet Silverado headed northbound.
The force of the collision caused the F150 to strike a Nissan NV200 work van, which had been stopped at the stop sign on westbound 58th Avenue.
Authorities say the driver of the Ford F150 was partially ejected through the back window of the truck cab, as he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
At this time, it is unclear whether a medical incident played a role in the crash, though the Sheriff’s Office has not ruled out this possibility.
The two occupants of the Chevrolet Silverado were taken to a local hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening. The driver of the Nissan van was unharmed.
The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
