LOWELL, Mich. — Authorities are investigating a tragic incident in Lowell that resulted in the death of a 28-year-old man and the serious injury of a 25-year-old woman on Tuesday morning. The Kent County Sheriff’s Office reported that the situation appears to have been an isolated domestic matter.

The investigation began around 4 a.m. when an ambulance crew, patrolling W. Main Street near Pleasant Avenue, discovered an abandoned SUV. The EMTs found what Sergeant Scott Dietrich of the Kent County Sheriff’s Office described as “concerning things inside the car,” leading them to suspect that someone may have been injured. While no one was inside the vehicle, there were clear signs of injury, which prompted authorities to investigate further.

“We initially thought that someone might have been injured and possibly returned to the nearby residence,” said Dietrich. The Kent County Sheriff’s Office and Lowell Police Department responded to a home on W. Main Street, which was located near where the vehicle had been found. Deputies quickly learned that the registered owner of the SUV had been involved in a domestic incident earlier in the night. According to Dietrich, the Lowell Police Department had responded to the dispute at approximately 10:30 p.m. Monday, which involved the man and woman.

Upon arriving at the home Tuesday morning, authorities gained entry with the assistance of a tactical team. Inside, they discovered the 28-year-old man deceased and the 25-year-old woman suffering from serious injuries. She was immediately transported to the hospital for medical treatment.

The sheriff’s office did not specify the exact nature of the injuries or the relationship between the man and the woman. Their identities have also not been released as of the latest update. However, authorities have emphasized that the situation appears to involve only the two individuals, with no further suspects or threats to the community.

“The investigation remains ongoing, and we are committed to thoroughly looking into this matter,” Dietrich said. “While we understand this situation is deeply concerning for the community, we want to reassure residents that there is no threat to public safety at this time.”

The road near the scene was closed for several hours as investigators worked at the location. It reopened around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Office has urged anyone with information related to the case to come forward. Residents can contact the sheriff’s office at 616.632.6125, or anonymously through Silent Observer at 616.774.2345.

“As always, we ask the community to help us with any information they may have, no matter how small, to assist with the investigation,” the sheriff’s office stated in a release.
