WYOMING, Mich. — A portion of 28th Street in Wyoming will be closed starting Monday morning for the installation of a new pedestrian bridge, city officials announced. The closure, set to begin at 9 a.m., will affect traffic from Michael Avenue SW to Burlingame Avenue SW and is expected to last through Tuesday.
For those wishing to view the installation, the city has designated a public viewing area on the south side of 28th Street, located in the former Lindo Mexico parking lot. The installation marks a significant milestone in the ongoing construction of the bridge, which will provide safer passage for pedestrians and cyclists across the busy thoroughfare.
The project, originally scheduled to begin in late February, faced delays due to inclement weather. City officials now expect sporadic lane closures to continue into April as construction progresses.
Despite the disruptions, the city has assured that businesses along 28th Street will remain accessible throughout the duration of the construction. The new bridge, which will accommodate two-way pedestrian and bicycle traffic, is part of the larger Wyoming City Center project, an initiative aimed at transforming the area into a walkable, defined downtown space.
When completed, the bridge will connect to a non-motorized trail network on the north side, providing easy access to Pinery Park, businesses along Porter Street, and the city of Grand Rapids. The south side of the bridge will connect to Wyoming High School, City Center public space, and trails leading into Byron Township.
This pedestrian bridge is just one component of the broader Wyoming City Center project, which began construction last year. The city’s long-standing goal of creating a central, walkable downtown area is set to become a reality as the project moves toward its anticipated completion in June.
