PORTAGE, Mich. — A 32-year-old Kalamazoo man is in serious condition after being struck with a hatchet outside a motel in Portage on Monday evening.

The Portage Department of Public Safety responded to a call around 7:30 p.m. reporting the attack at the Holiday Motel, located on South Westnedge Avenue near Interstate 94. Upon arrival, officers found the man in one of the motel rooms with severe laceration-type injuries. He was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he remains in serious condition.

Approximately two hours later, law enforcement located a person of interest at a nearby business. That individual was arrested on an unrelated warrant, though police have not yet disclosed their connection to the assault.

The incident remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Portage Department of Public Safety.
