COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A Kalamazoo County deputy was forced to shoot and kill a dog that attacked him during a traffic stop on Monday afternoon, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. when the deputy noticed a vehicle towing a dump trailer enter the Menards parking lot near Gull Road and North Sprinkle Road in Comstock Township.
The vehicle, the sheriff’s office said, was displaying a stolen license plate, which had been taken from a car reported stolen earlier. The deputy stopped the vehicle and began interacting with the driver.
According to the sheriff’s office, a dog inside the vehicle suddenly became aggressive. The dog exited the vehicle and lunged at the deputy, biting his uniform and vest. In response to the attack, the deputy discharged his firearm, killing the dog.
Despite the frightening encounter, the deputy was not injured. The driver of the vehicle was arrested and taken into custody on unrelated warrants, the sheriff’s office confirmed. Authorities plan to seek charges against the driver, including possession of stolen property, driving with a suspended license, and for the incident involving the dog.
The sheriff’s office emphasized that no other individuals were injured during the altercation, and the investigation into the event is ongoing. Further details, including the breed of the dog, have not yet been released.
