Grand Rapids, Mich. — A Mattawan man was sentenced to a lengthy prison term for his involvement in a violent incident near Paw Paw that left one person dead and another injured. Gregory Campos, 34, was sentenced to between 35 and 60 years in prison for second-degree murder, along with additional terms for charges including assault with intent to commit great bodily harm, operating while intoxicated causing death, and possession of a controlled substance.

The charges stem from a violent altercation that took place on December 23, 2023, at a residence near Fisk Lake Road in Waverly Township. According to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office, Campos arrived at the house in search of his girlfriend, who was not present at the time. Tensions quickly escalated when an argument broke out between Campos, a 28-year-old woman from Decatur, and a 28-year-old man from Paw Paw.

Authorities say Campos then got into his truck and intentionally struck both the woman and the man. The man attempted to flee the scene, running toward the house, but Campos followed him, driving his truck into the home and striking the man a second time. The man was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The woman sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Campos was apprehended at the scene and arrested by deputies. He was convicted on January 27, 2025, of second-degree murder and several other charges related to the incident.

The case has garnered significant attention due to the reckless nature of the attack and the severity of the charges filed against Campos. The tragic outcome has left the families of both victims grappling with the emotional and physical consequences of that fateful night. Campos’s lengthy sentence reflects the gravity of his actions and the lasting impact on the victims’ lives.
